Former Manchester United captain Roy Keane was unimpressed by Ruben Amorim’s sides effort against Aston Villa and singled out one defender as needing to do more in the Midlands

Roy Keane has questioned Diogo Dalot’s effort in Manchester United’s defeat to Aston Villa. The ex-Red Devils captain reckons the Portuguese star’s performance should be looked at by Ruben Amorim and that Dalot needs to ‘roll his sleeves up’.

A Morgan Rogers brace saw United fall to a 2-1 loss as Matheus Cunha got on the scoresheet. Amorim’s side have now recorded just two wins in eight Premier League matches.

United’s boss got additional bad news in the shape of an injury to talisman Bruno Fernandes, who is now set to miss games over the festive period. But Amorim first has to look at what transpired on the pitch, according to Keane.

The former Sunderland manager took issue with Dalot and several other players on Sunday afternoon. The Irishman was at a loss that they were unable to dig in when required.

Keane highlighted Roger’s first goal at Villa Park as a worrying sign. The Sky Sports pundit is uncertain whether United recognised the danger in the build up.

“You can have all the talent in the world,” Keane said. “We’ve mentioned it time and time again but you’ve got to roll your sleeves up and when the game gets a bit tight there’s moments where you go, ‘I’m just going to do my bit for the team’. There’s too many players, like Dalot, that just don’t do enough.

“I won’t use the word cheating but they’re not just doing enough. And after the game I’d be looking at him – I wouldn’t be looking at other bits of the game.

“Same for the first goal when Rogers gets the ball wide. We’re all sitting there and we know there’s danger. Do they not know there’s danger?”

With Bryan Mbeumo, Amad and Noussair Mazraoui away for AFCON, Dalot acknowledged players would have opportunities to step up. Youngsters Jack Fletcher and Shea Lacey both made their debuts.

“This is the time when opportunities come for other players and you have to step up and show you deserve to be in the team and play more minutes,” Dalot told Sky Sports post-match.

“I think that’s how the players who get opportunities need to look at it.”
