Jack Grealish may well have played his last game in an Everton shirt after David Moyes confirmed their worst fears over the Manchester City loanee’s foot injury
Jack Grealish’s dream of playing for England at the World Cup has been crushed after David Moyes confirmed that he’s unlikely to play again this season. Grealish, 30, picked up a stress fracture in his foot earlier this month and could require surgery.
Moyes has conceded that regardless of whether the Manchester City loanee goes under the knife, he’s set to miss the remainder of the season. Speaking ahead of Everton’s trip to Brighton on Saturday, Moyes explained: “We believe he’s probably going to need surgery but that’s still not absolutely confirmed, but it probably rules him out for the rest of the season, yes.
“Look, it’s really disappointing for the player, the club, for all of us here. He’s such an important part and he’s a big character with big experience for us and we’ll miss him, he’s done a lot of really good things for us.”
The former Aston Villa star was hoping to earn a place in Thomas Tuchel’s squad this summer. His last appearance for the Three Lions came in September 2024 and Tuchel is yet to call him up since taking the Wembley hot seat.

After missing out on the squad in October, Grealish spoke to Tuchel. “First of all you want to play well for your club because that’s what we do every week but obviously you want to be in the England squad,” the 30-year-old told Sky Sports.
“But I do understand it. I spoke to the manager and I understand there’s a lot of competition, especially in that left wing spot at the moment; Rashy’s [Marcus Rashford] flying, [Eberechi] Eze, Anthony Gordon – everyone’s doing so well. I can’t really complain, it is what it is and hopefully I can keep performing and influencing games.”
The injury has also plunged Grealish’s future on Merseyside into serious doubt. Everton have the option to sign him permanently by paying City £50million.

Grealish became surplus to requirements during the course of last season before Pep Guardiola made it clear that he was no longer part of his plans by not taking him to the Club World Cup last summer. City, who paid a British-record £100m to sign the playmaker from Villa in 2022, have also bought a number of forwards in the past year, including Antoine Semenyo for £62.5m.
Everton could attempt to negotiate a lower price with City, with Grealish having been a creative force since moving to Hill Dickinson Stadium. The Toffees could take advantage of the fact he’ll only have 12 months left on his contract when he returns to Manchester in May
