Team GB stars left in tears as BBC commentator says ‘that’s so cruel’
Team GB’s women’s curling team were left heartbroken after missing out on the Winter Olympics semi-finals in a cruel twist of fate that left players in tears
Team GB’s women’s curling team struggled to contain their emotions after missing out on a place in the final four at the Winter Olympics. The foursome, made up of Jenn Dodds, Rebecca Morrison, Sophie Jackson and Sophie Sinclair, maintained their medal aspirations with a commanding victory over Italy in their final round robin fixture.
However, their destiny was beyond their control, and their final stone was thrown as they waited for the result of USA vs Switzerland. The team lingered around the ice as the Swiss secured an impressive three in the final end to boost British hopes further by forcing an extra end.
A dramatic conclusion ensued, but the US prevailed with the final stone to secure victory and deny GB a semi-final berth. Unsurprisingly, the British curlers appeared visibly upset during their BBC interviews.
Sinclair could only brush away tears, whilst Morrison also struggled to maintain her composure. “We knew we just had to get that win today and see what happens,” said Jackson.

“Gutted. Absolutely gutted, but so proud of the team and the girls. We had a tough start to the week. I think we were the best team out there at the end of the round robin, but we just left it too late.”
Dodds added: “Four years ago, we got through on five and four, so it is one of these things. Unfortunately, this time it isn’t for us. So proud of the girls’ resilience, we know we have so much resilience and we have shown that this week.”
“We fought for everything, every shot. We were all together all the way. I couldn’t be more proud of these girls this week.”

Morrison stated: “Everyone has been amazing and I think we have felt the support these last few days. We knew we needed to win to stand a chance and everyone has got behind us.”
“It was super fun,” said Sinclair, despite the disappointment. “Our aim at the start of the week was to go out there and enjoy it.

“We all had the best time ever and that’s why we are so gutted. We just wanted more time on the ice, but I’m super proud of the team.”
The exit was particularly harsh for Team GB, according to former Olympic gold medalist curler, Vicky Wright. “That is so cruel. I feel for the GB girls,” she said.
“They have showcased themselves so well all week and it is hard to take. I am definitely proud of their performance.”
