Max Dowman understands JJ Gabriel’s issue with Man Utd star’s Premier League ban
Manchester United’s JJ Gabriel cannot play in the Premier League this season due to age restrictions
JJ Gabriel might be one of England’s most promising talents at present, but he is currently ineligible to play for Manchester United due to his age. To compete in England’s Premier League, players must have reached 15 years of age before August 31, meaning Gabriel has yet to progress to the United first team.
This mirrors the situation of Arsenal’s Max Dowman, who has recently made his debut for the Gunners. Dowman made history by scoring against Everton last weekend and becoming the youngest player ever to score in the Premier League.
The 16-year-old surpassed Cesc Fabregas‘ record for Arsenal and is flourishing in north London. However, there was a period when he couldn’t feature for the Gunners’ first team, due to a Premier League rule prohibiting those under the age of 16.
Dowman didn’t satisfy the strict age criteria in 2024, so the teenager had to wait until August 2025 to make his Premier League debut for Arsenal. He came on against Leeds United earlier this season and earned a penalty in the same match.

Now, Gabriel will have to adhere to these same regulations and bide his time to perform for United at the highest level. He has already been training with the first team and supporters are eagerly anticipating his debut.

However, the fact that the youngster only celebrated his 15th birthday last October has prevented him from being included in a matchday squad. There exists an incredibly narrow timeframe for Gabriel to shatter a record that has remained unbroken for nearly 70 years.
As the 2026/27 season kicks off, the youngster will have approximately eight weeks to make his debut and eclipse former United goalkeeper David Gaskell’s record. The goalie was a mere 16 years and 19 days old when he made his official debut in the 1956 FA Charity Shield – now referred to as the Community Shield.
This implies that Gabriel must maintain his scorching form, avoid injuries and sufficiently impress the new United manager in the summer to earn a call-up. Gabriel boasts 15 goals in 20 appearances for the under-18s across all competitions this season and has secured three caps for England’s under-16s.
Current interim boss Michael Carrick has expressed admiration for the teenager as he confirmed Gabriel’s exclusion from Premier League action ahead of their journey to Bournemouth. He said: “He’s not allowed, he’s too young.
“He’s doing really well, JJ. We’ve got some really good young players in the academy and we try and get the younger players up [with the first-team] as much as we can.
“We’re always trying to give that exposure to the players to come and train and feel it.”
