NASA Reopens Aerospace Scholars Program For Community College Students
NASA has reopened applications for its Community College Aerospace Scholars program, a national student challenge designed to connect two-year college coursework with careers in aerospace, science, engineering and technology. The agency’s Minority University Research and Education Project, which administers the initiative, is accepting registrations through Monday, Sept. 28.
The updated version of the program, known by its acronym NCAS, restructures the experience into two phases spanning the academic year. During the fall cohort phase, participants take part in live virtual sessions with NASA experts and submit projects that connect their current classwork to potential roles within the agency. Faculty involvement is central to the design, with instructors encouraged to help students who might not otherwise consider a path into aerospace fields.
Up to 1,000 qualifying submissions from the fall phase will earn a $500 award. Students who complete that stage move into a spring virtual career fair, where they connect directly with NASA professionals and industry representatives about job opportunities. A second round of submissions follows the career fair, with as many as 500 top entries receiving $250 awards. Alicia Baturoni Cortez, project manager for the Minority University Research and Education Project, said the challenge exists to give community college students a low-risk way to explore whether an aerospace career fits their goals, whether that means entering the workforce directly or transferring into a four-year STEM degree program.
NASA highlighted two recent participants, Kim Alexander and Ashley Rodriguez, as examples of the program’s potential impact. Alexander enrolled at Riverside Community College in California after years of working as a bartender and joined NCAS while considering a transfer to a four-year university. Her team’s work on a hypothetical human mission to Mars reshaped her sense of what career options were realistic. Rodriguez, a student at Miami-Dade Community College pursuing an information technology degree, said an NCAS project on laser relay communications introduced her to strategic communications work she had not previously considered. Both later completed NCAS-funded internships at NASA’s Aerosciences Evaluation and Test Capabilities Portfolio Office and have since moved into the agency’s Pathways internship track, a pipeline that can lead to full-time federal employment.
The relaunch arrives amid broader efforts across the federal government and private aerospace sector to widen recruitment pipelines beyond traditional four-year engineering programs. Community colleges enroll a significant share of the nation’s students pursuing technical and vocational credentials, and industry groups have increasingly pointed to these institutions as an underused source of talent for technician, manufacturing and support roles tied to spaceflight, satellite systems and advanced manufacturing.
Workforce shortages in engineering and applied sciences have prompted federal agencies and contractors alike to expand outreach to nontraditional student populations, including working adults, parents and career changers. Programs that offer direct mentorship, small stipends and exposure to agency staff are often cited as effective tools for building interest among students who may not see themselves reflected in typical STEM recruitment materials. NCAS, which has run in earlier forms for more than a decade, is one of a handful of federal initiatives specifically targeting community college enrollees rather than students already on a four-year university track.
