Editors’ Eighth Album Surface, Echo & Sound Was Set for 30 October on Play It Again Sam
Editors' eighth studio album, Surface, Echo & Sound, was scheduled for 30 October 2026 on Play It Again Sam, with concert dates running from November 2026 to March 2027.
Editors have set 30 October 2026 as the release date for Surface, Echo & Sound, the band’s eighth studio album. Spill Magazine, Mxdwn, Xsnoize and The Note all name Play It Again Sam as the label. The album was announced in June, alongside the single ‘The Rush’.
The release day is the one date every report agrees on. Xsnoize lists a show in Gdańsk on 14 November 2026, and its tour dates begin in January 2027. The report dates and the track count differ between outlets, and both differences are set out below.
A June Announcement Paired With ‘The Rush’
Clash Music, Hot Press and Xsnoize are dated 23 June 2026. Mxdwn’s report, dated 24 June, covers the album announcement. The Note is dated 25 June and calls ‘The Rush’ the album’s second single.
Spill Magazine gives 23 June as the release date of the single. The video was shot in Tokyo and directed by Henry Ehara, according to Spill and Mxdwn. Hot Press says the album also includes ‘Call It In’, which was released in April.
Riff Magazine gives the album 8 out of 10 in a review published before the release day, and lists the label as PIAS. The other reports that name a label give Play It Again Sam.
The single and the album are about four months apart, with the single arriving first. A review on Xsnoize is dated 30 October 2026.
Release Date and Label
Surface, Echo & Sound, Editors’ eighth studio album, was set for release on Friday 30 October 2026 on Play It Again Sam, according to The Note.
Eleven Tracks in Four Reports, Twelve Entries in One
Xsnoize, Mxdwn, Hot Press and The Note give the album 11 tracks. Clash Music’s tracklist lists 12 entries.
The tracklist Xsnoize publishes has 11 titles: the title track, Call It In, The Rush, Rescue, Shadow, Real, Happiness, Much Love, Butterfly Wings, Seriously and The Hills We Died Upon.
Five reports name Justin Lockey, the band’s guitarist, as producer: Spill, Mxdwn, Clash, Xsnoize and The Note. Xsnoize and The Note also say Lockey recorded the album.
Clash Music says Benjamin John Power produced EBM, the 2022 album that The Note and Xsnoize describe as made with Blanck Mass. Xsnoize identifies Blanck Mass with Benjamin John Power.
Mandolin, Acoustic Guitar and a Return to Roots
The Note describes the album as a return to roots after EBM, and says the mandolin on ‘The Rush’ provides a more organic core. Mxdwn describes a more organic sound with plenty of acoustic material.
Spill, Mxdwn and Xsnoize say Tom Smith plays mandolin on ‘The Rush’. Xsnoize reports Lockey calling the mandolin a big character on the album. Spill, Clash and The Note quote Lockey saying a lot of the rhythms come from the mandolin and the acoustic as much as they do from the drums.
Spill, Clash and The Note quote Lockey saying the mandolin is not used in a folky way but adds warmth.
Riff Magazine says the sound is much truer to the band’s original direction, with angular guitar riffs and driving drums sitting amid warm, nostalgic synth lines and ominous guitar textures. It says the sound is grounded in organic instrumentation, with mandolin on ‘Rescue’ and acoustic guitar on two tracks.
What the Band Says About the Sessions and ‘The Rush’
Smith describes the summer of recording as very productive, according to Spill and Clash. Clash reports that the sessions took place in Gloucestershire, on an industrial estate near where Smith lives, and that Smith jokingly suggests the setting was the opposite of Berlin’s Berghain club.
Xsnoize says the band regrouped in summer 2025 and worked in Gloucestershire, playing songs face to face so the material could develop in the room. The approach moved away from several albums made largely as studio projects and back to a more instinctive method, close to the band’s early practice-room style. Spill and Clash link the approach to Smith’s 2025 solo record, There Is Nothing In The Dark That Isn’t There In The Light.
Smith describes ‘The Rush’ as an imagined bar scene of two people talking about life, drinking and thinking about all the ups and downs. Mxdwn describes two people at a bar talking about life, and Hot Press describes them drinking and thinking about all the ups and downs.
Smith describes finding comfort in people close to the singer, such as friends, loved ones and family. Hot Press quotes Smith calling this a theme that comes up all the time, and Xsnoize quotes him saying it is in everything to a degree. Riff Magazine says the album keeps returning to anxiety and to the relationships that help people endure it.
The release day is the one date every report agrees on.
Summer Festivals, a Gdańsk Date and the 2027 Tour
Xsnoize lists seven summer dates between 9 July and 8 August 2026. They include Splendour in Nottingham on 18 and 19 July, and Low Festival in Benidorm on 31 July and 1 August. Those dates fall before the release day.
Xsnoize lists Inside Seaside Festival in Gdańsk on 14 November 2026 under its summer 2026 heading.
The 2027 run starts in Europe. Xsnoize lists 20 European dates, from Le 106 in Rouen on 26 January to Inselpark Arena in Hamburg on 20 February. It lists 10 UK and Irish dates, from Vicar Street in Dublin on 28 February to O2 Guildhall in Southampton on 12 March.
Hot Press says the tour stops at 29 venues across the UK and EU, along with the previously announced Dublin and Belfast shows, starting in January. Xsnoize lists 30 dates. Hot Press also names two previously announced shows: Vicar Street on 28 February 2027 and Ulster Hall in Belfast on 1 March 2027.
A Timeline From Announcement to March 2027
Read in order, the dates form a sequence. The announcement came in June 2026, the release day was set for 30 October, and the first concert Xsnoize lists after that is the Gdańsk show on 14 November. The next listed date, in Rouen on 26 January, comes about ten weeks later.
The UK and Irish leg opens in Dublin on 28 February, with Belfast on 1 March and Glasgow on 2 March, and closes in Southampton on 12 March. The Dublin date appears in both Xsnoize and Hot Press.
Southampton on 12 March 2027 is the final dated concert in these reports. Hot Press gives 29 venues across the UK and EU, while Xsnoize lists 30 dates, including the Dublin and Belfast shows.
