CDG Engie, Volt Singapore win first contracts to deploy fast public EV charging points

TWO electric vehicle (EV) charging operators have been awarded contracts to deploy mainly fast charging EV charging points across Singapore.

On Friday (Jun 14), Land Transport Authority (LTA) subsidiary EV-Electric Charging (EVe) said it awarded a contract each to Volt Singapore and ComfortDelGro (CDG) Engie, a joint venture between land transport operator CDG and French multinational utility company Engie.

These represent the first public EV charger deployment contracts after LTA awarded a large-scale tender to five EV charging operators in November 2022.

Under the new contracts, CDG Engie and Volt Singapore will progressively deploy EV charging points across 20 sites islandwide by 2025, with the first site expected to be ready by end-2024.

The charging points to be installed are mainly fast charging and will be primarily located at Housing and Development Board (HDB) commercial complexes and publicly accessible car parks.

Their minimum power ratings range from 7.4 kilowatts (kW) for alternating current chargers, to 50 kW for direct current chargers.

Sites where the charging points will be installed include Taman Jurong Shopping Centre, Pasir Ris West Plaza and Tampines Central Community Complex.

EVe said the new contracts were part of the government’s plan to deploy 120 fast chargers at around 60 HDB car parks in commercial complexes, town and neighbourhood centres, with a focus on locations frequented by high-mileage drivers, such as private-hire drivers.

Derek Tan, chief executive officer of EVe, observed that one “main wish” among EV drivers was to have more fast chargers, especially at public car parks near facilities such as coffee shops.

This was based on “valuable feedback” from taxi and fleet drivers in particular, he said.

“Fast charging will help to minimise (EV drivers’) downtime even as they take a quick break. We hope these new fast chargers across various HDB commercial complexes will give them that much needed boost,” he added.

CDG Engie and Volt Singapore are part of eight pre-qualified EV charging operators selected by EVe for the next phase of public EV charging point deployment.

As at January 2024, there are 2,400 EV charging points at about 700 car parks located in all HDB towns and estates, except for Tengah.
