Alexander Isak admits he hasn’t spoken to Eddie Howe since Newcastle fallout
Alexander Isak finally got his move to Liverpool on transfer deadline day but it came at a personal cost, as the £125million man saw his relationship with Eddie Howe break down
Alexander Isak has revealed that he still hasn’t spoken to Eddie Howe since his acrimonious departure from Newcastle. Isak, 26, went on strike during the summer transfer window, refusing to play for Newcastle after being denied a dream move to Liverpool.
St James’ Park chiefs stood firm until the final days of the window, where they finally landed a replacement in Nick Woltemade. Liverpool promptly made a British-record bid worth £125million, which Newcastle reluctantly accepted, and Isak joined the Premier League champions to end the biggest transfer saga of the summer.
The Sweden international was heavily criticised for his behaviour, losing the ardent support that Newcastle fans once had for him and the respect of many neutrals. Howe also admitted that his relationship with Isak changed after the forward went on strike, and it seems that the pair haven’t reconciled things in the six weeks since the move.
“It’s nothing I want to dwell on now,” Isak told a press conference ahead of Sweden’s World Cup qualifier at home to Switzerland on Friday. “It doesn’t benefit anyone, neither me nor Newcastle, so let it be.”
When asked if he’d spoken to his former manager, the Anfield star replied: “No.”

Isak scored his first goal for Liverpool in last month’s Carabao Cup win against Southampton, but he’s yet to get off the mark in the Premier League, where the Reds’ form has plummeted. Sandwiching a 1-0 defeat against Galatasaray in the Champions League, Liverpool have lost back-to-back games to fall behind Arsenal in the Premier League table.
Yet to play a full match for club or county this season, Isak is chomping at the bit, saying: “I’m working hard to push myself and play my game.

“Things have been a bit tougher for us. I believe that as the team improves and things start to flow better, it will also go better for me. I’ve been really happy so far. A city where the team has a very good relationship with the fans which is important. It’s been nice so far.”
The 26-year-old added: “I’m ready for 90 minutes if needed. It’s been a month now. I’ve had a lot more playing time and things have calmed down. I feel in a much better position now than last time.”
Liverpool are back in action next Sunday, taking on arch enemies Manchester United. The Reds then travel to face Eintracht Frankfurt in the Champions League before a trip to Brentford.
