Chris Sutton ‘concerned’ by what Arsenal did seconds after thrashing Tottenham

Arsenal have again seen their celebrations flagged as excessive as Chris Sutton highlighted their reaction to their thumping north London derby win at Tottenham

Chris Sutton claimed he was “slightly concerned” with Arsenal’s reaction after the north London derby as he threatened to reignite the over celebrating debate.

The Gunners had to cop plenty of criticism in the aftermath of their draw at Wolves on Wednesday, where they surrendered a 2-0 lead to the team bottom of the Premier League. It saw the gap at the top shrink and, before kick-off at Tottenham, they only led Manchester City by two points.

They produced a timely display, hammering their rivals on their own patch with a 4-1 win. Eberechi Eze and Viktor Gyokeres both scored twice and the Arsenal players lapped it up at full-time in front of the travelling support.

Sutton said on BBC that he was “slightly concerned with the over celebrating from the Arsenal players. Celebrate at the end of the season when you have won the title.”

Arsenal are under pressure to make this their year after several near misses. Mikel Arteta has presided over three second place finishes in a row and during some of those campaigns the Gunners surrendered top spot late in the day, with their last trophy coming in 2020.

In 2024 Jamie Carragher received criticism from the Arsenal faithful after they saw off Liverpool. Martin Odegaard ended up taking pictures of the club photographer with the Sky Sports pundit stating: “Just get down the tunnel, you’ve won a game, it’s three points. You’ve been brilliant, you’re back in the title race. Get down the tunnel.”

Odegaard would later respond to Carragher and claimed: “If you’re not allowed to celebrate when you win a game, when are you allowed to celebrate? We’re happy with the win and we’ll stay humble.”

It led to constant jibes about what constituted over celebrating and whether Arsenal players were rights to revel in major victories. Sunday’s win was certainly timely with City winning four of their last five as Arteta issued an emotional response.

He said: “This is not a job. It’s much bigger than that. It’s the purpose that we have, it’s what we love doing. It can be very rewarding and today football shows you keep going! it is worth it with the people that we have in this club.”
