Hozpitality Honors Top 30 California Hotel General Managers
Hozpitality Group launched its first California GM Powerlist, honoring 30 hotel leaders and a lifetime achievement winner in Los Angeles.
Hozpitality Group brought together California’s hospitality leadership on August 28 to unveil its inaugural Best GM Powerlist, an honor recognizing 30 general managers from hotels across the state. The invitation-only event took place at The Westin Los Angeles Airport, drawing tourism executives, hotel operators and industry sponsors for an evening centered on leadership recognition.
The California list marks the platform’s first expansion into the United States after being established in the Middle East and India. Honorees were selected through an online voting process open to peers, colleagues and industry partners, with the final 30 representing properties spanning major hotel brands and independent boutique hotels throughout California, from Four Seasons Beverly Hills to The Hoxton Downtown LA and San Ysidro Ranch in Montecito.
Before the awards presentation, the evening opened with a panel discussion titled “The Next Chapter of California Hospitality: What’s Ahead for Hotels, Tourism & Business?” Moderated by Tajh Henderson of Gateway LA, the conversation featured Anna Marie Presutti of San Francisco Travel Association, Ron Frierson of the Hollywood Chamber of Commerce, Steve Pufpaf of The Westin Los Angeles Airport, and Michael D’Amodio of Azul Hospitality. Panelists discussed tourism competitiveness, shifting traveler expectations and the operational challenges general managers should prepare for over the next three to five years.
A separate honor, the Hozpitality Lifetime Achievement Award, went to Javier Cano, area general manager of The Ritz-Carlton, Los Angeles and JW Marriott Los Angeles L.A. LIVE, in recognition of his long-running contribution to the city’s hospitality sector. The award was presented by Frierson alongside Raj Bhatt, founder and chief executive of Hozpitality Group. Ten additional professionals were named Commended General Managers, a secondary tier acknowledging leaders at properties including The Culver Hotel, The LINE LA and Found Hotel Santa Monica.
The recognition arrives as California’s hospitality sector continues to navigate a mixed recovery, with urban markets such as Los Angeles and San Francisco rebuilding convention and international travel demand while coastal resort destinations report steadier leisure bookings. Hotel operators across the state have faced rising labor and insurance costs, along with pressure to modernize guest technology and sustainability practices, making general manager leadership an increasingly scrutinized function within hotel ownership groups and management companies.
Industry recognition programs like the Powerlist have become more common as hospitality brands seek to highlight operational leadership amid competitive labor markets, where retaining experienced general managers is viewed as central to guest satisfaction scores and property performance. Similar leadership lists in international markets have drawn hotel management companies, tourism boards and destination marketing organizations into shared industry conversations, a model organizers appear to be replicating in California through networking-focused programming paired with the awards presentation.
Vandana Bhatt, co-founder and managing director of Hozpitality Group, said the initiative was designed to extend beyond a single ceremony. “We wanted to create something that brings the hospitality community together—not simply to recognize achievements, but to create opportunities for people to connect,” she said, noting plans to build on the program in future years.
According to a news release distributed via PR Newswire, the evening concluded with organizers signaling intentions to expand the California Powerlist program in coming years as part of Hozpitality’s broader U.S. footprint.
