Man Utd timeline to appoint Amorim replacement as talks underway with candidates
Manchester United sacked Ruben Amorim on Monday with Darren Fletcher taking charge temporarily as Ole Gunnar Solskjaer emerges as leading contender for caretaker role
Manchester United are set to give Darren Fletcher at least two matches as caretaker manager before confirming an interim until the end of the season.
United bid farewell to Ruben Amorim on Monday, marking the conclusion of his 14-month stint at Old Trafford. The 40-year-old’s final match in charge was Sunday’s 1-1 draw at Leeds.
Ex-United midfielder and current Under-18s coach Fletcher will take the reins for Wednesday’s journey to Burnley, with Jonny Evans also returning to the club to lend a hand.
As per The Athletic, United are likely to give Fletcher at least two games – the Premier League fixture against Burnley and Sunday’s FA Cup face-off at home to Brighton – in the dugout.
It’s further reported that United are then set to announce an interim solution until the close of the 2025/26 campaign before a permanent successor for Amorim is unveiled and confirmed in the summer.

Ole Gunnar Solskjaer is believed to be the front-runner to become United’s caretaker manager after engaging in discussions with the club, according to Manchester Evening News. The Norwegian, who has been jobless since departing Besiktas in August, is being considered as a potential longer-term, interim appointment until the season’s end with Ruud van Nistelrooy also among the contenders.
Solskjaer has been seen in the vicinity of his Cheshire home and is reportedly willing to lend a hand to his old club. He held the reins at United for nearly three years before being dismissed in November 2021, securing 91 victories in his 168 matches and leading the Reds to a runner-up spot in his second full season.
After more than three years away from management, the 52-year-old returned to take the helm at Besiktas in January. He guided them to a fourth-place finish in the Turkish Super Lig. However, Solskjaer was let go earlier this season after Besiktas were defeated in the Conference League play-offs.
During a Q&A session at the Oslo Business Forum in September 2024, Solskjaer indicated that he would be ready and willing to answer the call if United ever wanted him back.
Solskjaer stated: “If the family [United] asks, I would say yes every day of the week. It feels wrong to talk about jobs that other people have now, but I would say yes, of course.”
