Mason Greenwood’s Marseille teammate backs him to earn shock England recall

Mason Greenwood has just one England cap to his name but the Marseille star is being talked up for an international recall after rebuilding his career in France

Mason Greenwood continues to fire in the goals for Marseille and his team-mate believes an England recall is not out of the question as he continues to rebuild his career in France.

On Tuesday the Ligue 1 giants secured a Champions League win over Newcastle, which was Greenwood’s first meeting with an English side since he left Manchester United 16 months ago. It was whilst at the Red Devils that the forward landed his one and only cap for the Three Lions.

That was against Iceland in September 2020 but his form means the World Cup is now on his radar. Greenwood has not given up hope of playing for England again and his team-mates in Marseille believe he is deserving of some international recognition.

The 24-year-old forward has come up with 33 goals in 53 games since his arrival in southern France for £26.6million. Before he officially left Manchester Greenwood had a loan stint in Spain with Getafe, where he also impressed.

American international Timothy Weah, whose legendary father George had stints in the Premier League with Chelsea and Man City, believes Greenwood is worthy on an England place and is determined to help him get there.

He told The Sun: “When I speak about Mason it’s a special feeling because it’s very rare in a lifetime that you get to share the pitch with such an amazing player and amazing character. We’ve grown closer since I’ve joined the team and been here. Hopefully he gets that call-up soon. I’m super proud of him. He’s having an amazing season and hopefully I can help him to reach those heights that he’s aiming for.”

Despite Greenwood’s exploits on the pitch, the controversy surrounding charges of attempted rape, controlling and coercive behaviour and assault occasioning actual bodily harm against him, which were dropped, still follow him and were largely behind his Manchester exit.

Thomas Tuchel has a wealth of talent available to him with England and in September the German admitted that bringing Greenwood back into the fold wasn’t on his radar.

“I have not spoken to him until now. I have not spoken to him or his camp,” the Three Lions boss said. “My understanding was that he tries to play for Jamaica so we didn’t give it another thought. He was not in the mix at the moment and he is not in our thoughts for our team.”
