MVG instantly apologises on live TV for X-rated slip-up that speaks volumes
Michael van Gerwen beat Gian van Veen on Premier League Darts opening night in Newcastle, and was a little bit too relieved about getting the win afterwards.
Michael van Gerwen swore live on Sky Sports during his interview after winning the Premier League Darts night one in Newcastle – before immediately apologising for that slip up! He said: “About f****** time I won something. Sorry, sorry for the language!”
Sky Sports presenter Emma Paton in turn apologised in the aftermath of what van Gerwen said. “Apologies for the language that you heard there.” Wayne Mardle saw the funny side, though, chuckling along with van Gerwen, who made the remark after being handed a trophy honouring his victory.
He beat Premier League debutant, Gian van Veen, in the final. Van Gerwen won 6-4 against his fellow Dutchman for his first Premier League win since 2024.

The Dutchman was less foul-mouthed during the rest of his interview, while also immediately realising what he’d done. Van Gerwen said: “It’s a good start, and without even playing my A performance, I still won it.
“It was deadly. I delivered fantastic finishes at the right moments, and whenever I had to perform on my own leg, I did. That makes you win games. It’s simple. That’s how it is.”

It was a far cry from his performance at the World Masters mere days ago. Van Gerwen acknowledged: “I had a lot of problems at the World Masters at the weekend.
“There is still a lot to work on. I know I can do better than this, but this gives you confidence.
“Winning games is the best medicine to perform better. It’s always nice to respond well.
“In the Masters, I had some issues at home, so I had to deal with it, but to bounce back with a win means a lot to me. It’s a nice start and gives me confidence because it is going to be a long 16 weeks.
“Of course, I want to the league, but that isn’t my main priority. The Premier League isn’t my main priority, either.
“That is ranking tournaments now. I always said after the World Championships the Premier League is the second-biggest tournament for players.
“But for me, personally, the UK Open and the Matchplay are more important. But that doesn’t get away from the fact I’m not coming here to not win.
“There’s still room for improvement and – when you keep that in mind – anything is possible. The consistency has been missing in my game recently, but I want to enjoy what I’m doing, and if you enjoy it, then the results come.”
Sky Sports discounted Premier League and EFL package
Sky has slashed the price of its Essential TV and Sky Sports bundle ahead of the 2025/26 season, saving members £192 and offering more than 1,400 live matches across the Premier League, EFL and more.
Sky will show at least 215 live Premier League games next season, an increase of up to 100 more.
