Spotify Names Five Songs That Defined Summer 2026
Spotify has released its annual list of Songs of Summer, naming five tracks that the streaming giant says best captured the mood of the season across the Northern Hemisphere. The announcement, published Wednesday, caps off a months-long editorial process that began with predictions in May and a midseason update in July.
The final list, selected by Spotify’s global team of music editors using a combination of streaming data, cultural impact, and editorial judgment, spans genres and continents. It includes Ariana Grande’s “hate that i made you love me,” Ella Langley’s “Choosin’ Texas,” “Rein Me In” by Sam Fender and Olivia Dean, “Dai Dai” by Shakira and Burna Boy, and “Spend Dat” by Yung Miami.
According to Spotify, Grande’s track was the most-streamed song of the summer worldwide, debuting at No. 1 on the platform’s Global Chart on May 29 and logging 22 days atop that chart along with 89 days in the Global Top 10. The company noted the song’s success coincided with Grande crossing 100 million monthly listeners in August, a milestone tied to momentum from her Eternal Sunshine Tour.
Langley’s “Choosin’ Texas” put together what Spotify described as a record-breaking run, spending 70 days at No. 1 in the United States and 98 days on the Global Top 50, a run the company says helped fuel a broader country music surge in the United Kingdom. Meanwhile, “Rein Me In” by Fender and Dean dominated in the U.K. and Ireland, holding the top spot in both markets for 75 days before climbing to No. 63 on the Global Chart in early August, a rise Spotify attributed partly to a widely watched live festival performance.
“Dai Dai,” billed as the official anthem of this summer’s major international soccer tournament, topped charts in 17 countries including Switzerland, Germany and Portugal, according to Spotify, and posted its highest streaming numbers the day after the tournament’s final. The company said the collaboration nearly doubled Burna Boy’s listenership over the summer while pushing Shakira past 100 million monthly listeners. Rounding out the list, Yung Miami’s “Spend Dat” saw daily streams surge more than 200% over the season, with her monthly audience growing from 1.6 million in May to 6.3 million by August, a jump Spotify linked to a viral dance trend on social media.
The Songs of Summer franchise has become one of Spotify’s more closely watched annual exercises, offering a snapshot of how listening habits shift with the calendar and how quickly a single viral moment—whether a sports tournament, a dance trend or a festival set—can reshape an artist’s audience. For labels and artists, placement on such lists carries real commercial weight, often translating into sustained streaming momentum well beyond the initial release window.
The list also underscores how genre boundaries continue to blur in mainstream listening. This year’s selections range from mainstream pop and hip-hop to country and Afrobeats-influenced global collaborations, reflecting a broader industry trend in which streaming platforms increasingly reward cross-genre and cross-market appeal over songs tied to a single regional audience. Sports-driven anthems and festival breakout moments, in particular, have become recurring drivers of summer streaming spikes in recent years.
Spotify said it will continue tracking listening trends tied to the summer’s biggest cultural moments in upcoming editorial features, alongside a playlist compiling its original seasonal predictions.
