YFORE Unveils Cabin Sensing System With Georgia Plant Launch

YFORE Technology, a global Tier-1 automotive electronics supplier, has introduced a new in-cabin sensing system designed to close longstanding gaps in driver and occupant monitoring technology. The announcement coincided with the official opening of the company’s first North American manufacturing facility, located in Suwanee, Georgia.

The new system, called the Occupant & Driver Monitoring System, or ODMS, combines a camera-equipped smart mirror with automotive-grade radar mounted in the cabin roof. According to the company, this pairing is meant to overcome a persistent weakness in existing monitoring technology: cameras alone often fail to detect passengers hidden behind seatbacks, tucked into footwells, or covered by blankets or heavy clothing. By adding radar, which can penetrate fabric and physical obstructions using radio-frequency signals, YFORE says its system can track subtle indicators such as micro-breathing patterns in rear seats even when a passenger is not visible to a camera lens.

YFORE describes the setup as covering seven distinct functions within the vehicle cabin. These include detecting driver fatigue, distraction, and unresponsiveness, as well as identifying phone use behind the wheel. The system is also built to monitor seatbelt status, classify who is occupying each seat, and detect the presence of any living occupant anywhere in the cabin, including areas outside the driver’s immediate field of monitoring. The company positions this combination of functions as a foundation intended to help automakers meet the five-star safety threshold under Euro NCAP, the independent vehicle safety assessment program used widely across the European market.

Beyond the sensing capability itself, YFORE emphasizes the physical design of the system. By housing the optical components inside the smart mirror and using a single compact radar unit rather than multiple distributed sensors, the company says automakers can avoid cutting several openings into a vehicle’s headliner and avoid the added wiring complexity that typically comes with spreading sensors across the roof. YFORE frames this as a way to preserve interior aesthetics while making the system easier to adapt across different vehicle platforms and models.

The debut arrives as regulators and consumers alike have pushed for more robust in-cabin safety technology in recent years. Driver monitoring systems, once limited to premium vehicles, have become increasingly common as automakers respond to rising rates of distracted driving and to regulatory pressure in markets such as Europe, where NCAP ratings influence purchasing decisions and manufacturer reputations. Child presence detection, meant to prevent hot-car deaths, has also become a focal point for regulators in the United States and elsewhere, adding pressure on suppliers to deliver systems that can reliably detect occupants regardless of visibility conditions.

Radar-camera fusion, the approach YFORE is highlighting, reflects a broader industry trend toward combining sensor types rather than relying on a single technology. Camera-only systems have historically struggled with occlusion and lighting conditions, while radar alone lacks the visual detail needed to assess behaviors like drowsiness or phone use. Suppliers across the industry have been experimenting with similar multimodal combinations, betting that automakers will prioritize systems that can satisfy an expanding list of regulatory and safety-rating requirements without adding excessive hardware complexity or cost to vehicle production lines.
