Former world heavyweight champion Joshua has not fought since he was stunned with a fifth-round stoppage by British rival Daniel Dubois last September. It halted Joshua’s momentum under trainer Ben Davison and his charge towards another world title tilt and he has now opted for a warm-up clash with YouTuber Paul.
Paul lost to Tyson Fury’s brother Tommy in 2023 before he beat boxing great Mike Tyson in an eight-round contest last year and had been due to face Gervonta Davis until a civil lawsuit against the WBA lightweight champion scuppered that proposed last week’s exhibition bout. Anthony Joshua and Jake Paul are expected to clash in Miami on December 19, just six days before Christmas. Paul had been forced to scramble to find a new opponent after he cancelled his bout with Gervonta Davis which was due to take place last Friday. Paul had pencilled in either December 12 or 19 for his ring return but the latter date has been chosen.

Anthony Joshua v Jake Paul is set to be streamed by Netflix in the UK and worldwide. This would represent a change for Joshua who is contracted to fight on streaming platform DAZN. But Paul’s controversial meeting with Mike Tyson was shown on Netflix, as was Katie Taylor’s trilogy fight with Amanda Serrano. If this fight is broadcast along similar lines, there will be no extra charge for current Netflix subcribers.

Jake Paul’s team is due in London to iron out the details of the contest which is expected to be sanctioned as a professional bout. The pair are due to clash over eight three-minute rounds and wear regulation 10oz gloves. The Brit is expected to earn at least £50million for the fight which will be broadcast on Netflix. Paul has padded his record by fighting ex-MMA stars and controversially outpointed a 58-year-old Mike Tyson 12 months ago. He has largely competed at cruiserweight and could be at a three-stone weight disadvantage against Brit Joshua.
