Carragher spells out reality of Man Utd and Chelsea hires – ‘The answer is no’
Jamie Carragher has questioned the managerial decisions taken by Manchester United and Chelsea with their new coaches not possessing the CVs you’d expect for clubs of that calibre
Jamie Carragher has claimed that Manchester United and Chelsea‘s recent managerial hires are “underwhelming” and don’t offer them with the best chances to eventually win the Premier League.
The Blues axed Enzo Maresca on New Year’s Day and moved quick to replace him, bringing in Liam Rosenior from Strasbourg. The former player has a CV that reads Derby, Hull and the French side, but he’s yet to work in the top flight despite his rising reputation.
He’s won one and lost one of his two games in charge, but his appointment follows a trend from the ownership that has seen them go for managers with potential – Graham Potter and Maresca among them – rather than pursue big names as was the case in the past.
United meanwhile sacked Ruben Amorim and bought in Michael Carrick until the end of the season. Bar a three-match caretaker spell, he too has never held a top job in the Premier League. His managerial history coming with Middlesbrough.
Carragher claims the big name manager is almost being killed off and both aforementioned clubs have not hired the best individual, despite both having potential.

He wrote in the Telegraph: “For those working their way through a shortlist of suitable candidates, there has to be a key, overriding question: ‘Does this coach give us the best chance of winning the Premier League?’ With respect to Rosenior and Carrick, the answer is no.
“They may become brilliant coaches. If they go on to have stellar coaching careers, those who backed and identified their potential to manage at the highest level will deserve applause. But it must be acknowledged how underwhelming the latest recruitment decisions by two of England’s biggest and most successful clubs are.”
Carragher has cited a major change in the footballing landscape, with clubs no longer seeking a dominant character to oversee all aspects of the club. Instead they have people in positions to deal with that and simply want an individual to coach the squad they create.
He said: “Chelsea fans yearn for another Mourinho or Ancelotti, and United supporters continue to wait for the next Ferguson – the embodiment of their ambitions who they can describe as their manager. Meanwhile, their directors look elsewhere because many of the responsibilities once absorbed by an all-powerful leader are delegated.”
