Carrick explains why he won’t be copying Ferguson’s ‘hairdryer’ treatment
Michael Carrick knows he cannot emulate the great Sir Alex Ferguson when it comes to dishing out dressing room rollockings to his Manchester United charges
Michael Carrick admits he doesn’t have the infamous ‘hairdryer treatment in his locker like Sir Alex Ferguson used to. Carrick has taken charge of Manchester United on an interim basis until the end of the season.
Carrick has had no reason to lose his temper, having overseen four wins from five games since replacing Ruben Amorim. But even if he feels the need to shout at his squad, Carrick insists he will never come close to being as fiery as Fergie used to be.
Carrick witnessed Fergie lose his cool countless times, during his glittering playing career at Old Trafford. And he said: “I haven’t yet, no (shouted at them).
“There’s a time for all sorts of emotions and that’s the beauty of being in this position – you’ve got to pick the right time and tap on the right kinds of buttons to get the right reactions.

“I’m not sure I could replicate that (the hairdryer). I wouldn’t try to! A couple of times I’ve seen it, and it puts you at the back of your seat, trying to get further away from it.
“But, again, you’re talking about Sir Alex and he was the genius at using people and getting the best out of people in so many different ways – support, pushing, a bit stronger than pushing at times.
“But it worked. It was all about getting the best out of his players.”
And while he may not be able to scold his players like his former boss, Carrick understandably admits that Sir Alex has had the biggest impact on his own managerial career.

He added: “There’s a few times I’ve done something and then it’s not until after that I remember something that happened years ago with different managers or coaches. Experience is a beautiful thing to draw upon in different ways and that’s just life.
“Listen, Sir Alex had the biggest impact on me – I think that’s pretty obvious to say because of everything we achieved here. But I think just learning and knowing that I’ve never got all the answers and to just keep searching for more experience. That’s why the staff are there to help in that regard.
Carrick is loving his return to United – and believes it is the ultimate job. He added: “It’s the ultimate role. I’m really enjoying it, I love what I’m doing. I’m fortunate.
“I feel privileged to be in the position I am, but it’s not the fact that I believe I can do it and I’m here to do it. I don’t decide how long that’s going to be, but I love being here and and while I’m here, I’ll give everything I can.”
