Chris Eubank Jr fulfils promise to pay £50,000 to Conor Benn undercard fighters

The British boxer made a rather generous vow ahead of his showdown with Conor Benn, and with just over a week to go until the clash, the Brit has fulfilled promise

Chris Eubank Jr is a man of his word after fulfilling his promise to give £50,000 to the fighters on the undercard of his doomed meeting with Conor Benn three years ago.

Eubank Jr and Benn were due to go head-to-head back in October 2022, but the blockbuster showdown was cancelled just a few days before fight night when it emerged Benn had failed two drug tests in the build-up. The 28-year-old has since had his suspension lifted and has been cleared to fight in the UK.

Eubank Jr, along with the undercard fighters, suffered a financial loss after their first meeting was cancelled. But three years later, the 35-year-old vowed he would “set it right” by giving £50,000 from his incoming purse for those affected to split among themselves. “The first fight, 20,000 people bought tickets. Hotel rooms, plane tickets, accommodation, planned their whole weekend about this fight and none were compensated by Eddie/Matchroom/Conor,” he said.

“Worse than that, the undercard… there were a number of fighters who went through entire camps – they aren’t cheap – thousands if not tens of thousands on trainers, gym fees, nutritionists, physiotherapy, these fighters all paid for their camps, lost all that money and were never compensated.”

Ahead of the original meeting, there was a stacked undercard, which included the likes of Chris’ younger cousin Harlem, super-bantamweight titleholder Ellie Scotney and Olympic champion Galal Yafai. In total, there were 14 fighters set to compete on fight night. Therefore, each boxer affected will receive £3,571.43.

British light-heavyweight star Lyndon Arthur – who is scheduled to take on rival Anthony Yarde on the Eubank Jr vs Benn undercard next weekend – was quick to react to the news. In a post uploaded to X – formerly known as Twitter, he posted: “Gotta respect Eubank junior. He actually paid what he said he would off the under card from the 1st one.”
