Eddie Howe would undoubtedly improve Man Utd but he’d be stupid to make switch
Eddie Howe would bring stability and common sense to the madhouse that is Manchester United, but why would he want to go there? He would be ruining his reputation.
Roy Keane reckons Eddie Howe is the right man for Manchester United. And he might be making a valid point. But the problem is, United is not the right club for Howe.
In fact, it’s difficult to find a manager who United is the right club for. Howe would be a conservative but sensible appointment as Ruben Amorim’s replacement. Just like Gareth Southgate would be.
Howe is a calming influence, intelligent, forward thinking and ambitious. He has done a great job at Newcastle, where he has awakened a sleeping giant, getting his club into the Champions League and winning a domestic trophy.
He left the comfort zone of Bournemouth for the goldfish bowl of Tyneside, where success was craved by supporters whose lives revolve around their beloved football team. And he proved himself by delivering.
Even the likes of Kevin Keegan and Sir Bobby Robson, revered figures in the north east, couldn’t manage what Howe has.

He would improve United’s chances of getting some stability. Gaining a genuine foothold, to give themselves something to build on when it comes to heading back in the right direction again.
But Howe is not stupid. Like everyone else, he has watched United’s chronic decline from a distance this past decade. He knows United are supremely dysfunctional. He knows the club’s owners care more about profits than prizes.

He knows United are less willing to spend what it takes to bring world class footballers to Old Trafford, and need perhaps six transfer windows to build a team capable of challenging the likes of Arsenal, Liverpool and Manchester City. And he now knows, in the wake of Amorim’s sacking, that he might have to contend with interference from those above him.
In short – there is more chance of United winning the Champions League, than there is of Howe being persuaded to become the club’s next permanent manager.
