Mirror Football takes a closer look at how the legendary show is brought to air
All you need to know about the BBC’s Match of the Day and how it’s recorded
- Live: Match of the Day is recorded and broadcast live. While the football match highlights are pre-edited and recorded at the stadiums throughout the day, the studio segments—including the presenting, punditry, and analysis—happen in real-time as you watch them on BBC One.
- Real-time incidents: The live nature was proven as recently as last night, (January 7, 2026), when presenter Gabby Logan had to leave the show just 20 minutes into the broadcast due to a family emergency following the sad passing of her father, Terry Yorath. Mark Chapman had to rush over from his shift at BBC Radio 5 Live to take over the hosting duties mid-programme.
- Breaking news & results: Because it is live, the presenters can react to late-breaking news, managerial sackings, or post-match interviews that have only just finished.
- The Sunday papers: At the end of the show, the pundits often look at the “back pages” of the next morning’s newspapers. These physical papers only arrive at the studio shortly before or during the broadcast.
- Commentary: Contrary to a popular urban myth, the commentators are at the stadiums and record their commentary live during the full 90 minutes of the match. This is then edited down to fit the highlights package shown on TV.
- On-duty pundits: Pundits and producers arrive at the dock10 studios in Salford to watch all the afternoon games simultaneously on multiple monitor at around 3pm.
- Match edits: Editors then work frantically to cut 90 minutes of footage into 7–10 minute highlight reels. Pundits pick out specific clips for their tactical analysis.
- On-air: The show goes on air live. While the recorded highlights play, the pundits and presenter often use that time to prepare for the next segment or discuss the game they just watched.
