Lionesses still face international battle for Arsenal star despite call-up
Arsenal full-back Taylor Hinds has been called up to the England squad for the first time despite previously representing Jamaica.
The international future of Arsenal Women full-back Taylor Hinds is still ‘up in the air’, despite her being part of the England squad for the friendlies against Brazil and Australia later this month.
Hinds was named in Sarina Wiegman ’s Lionesses squad with her dual heritage enabling her to represent both England and Jamaica. She made her senior debut for the Reggae Girlz in a friendly against France last year.
Having only represented the nation in a non-competitive match, it allows her to represent England. Ahead of the international break, Jamaica head coach Hubert Busby Jr has given the latest on her international decision.
“I think she’s actually alluded to that. Her future is up in the air and she hasn’t made a final decision yet,” he said.
“We respect that. We’ve had numerous conversations and communications up to yesterday, and we respect her decision at this time.”
He added: “It’s unfortunate in terms of some of the matches we would have liked to have got her in previously. But some of the paperwork, and again, some of the things were outside of our control and outside of her control.”
“It is a friendly, so I think that’s where it comes in. As long as they continue to be friendlies, the same way she played for us and be able to go back, is the same way that she would still be able to make that decision.
Following her call-up to the Lionesses squad, Hinds took to Instagram to give her reaction. “It’s a privilege to have two nationalities and I’m incredibly proud to represent both,” she wrote.
“I have nothing but the utmost respect and appreciation for Jamaica. They’ve been so understanding and genuinely want the best for me, which means a lot.
“Being called up to represent England is an amazing feeling and opportunity. I know what it means to wear the shirt, to be a Lioness, and it truly means everything to me and my family.”
Wiegman also explained the decision to give Hinds the nod in her latest squad after critics pointed out how she was ignored whilst playing consistently well for Liverpool but called up instantly after her transfer, despite being second choice behind Gunners right-back Katie McCabe. “
We have been following Taylor for a long time,” she said. “She’s come through the pathway. She has dual heritage so she’s eligible for us. We started having conversations and she hasn’t played much, but we are in a new cycle and I want to see talented players in some different positions.”
England have been handed a double injury blow ahead of the two friendlies next week. Arsenal ’s Katie Reid and Man City’s Grace Clinton have both pulled out of the squad with injuries.
As a replacement, Liverpool defender Grace Fisk has been called up to the squad. She could get her chance to impress in the friendlies against Brazil and Australia.
