Man Utd’s Newcastle loss ensures Amorim’s flops will set dismal club record
Ruben Amorim has presided over a poor run of results since taking charge at Manchester United and they will now officially become the worst Premier League side in the club’s history
Ruben Amorim’s Manchester United side will officially post the club’s worst showing in the Premier League era. The defeat at Newcastle means they can no longer reach the previous all-time low amount of points – which was 58.
Even a stellar end to the season would see them hit 56 points – which will be the lowest total they’ve posted in more than 30 years. United have set a number of unwanted records this term and it has long looked as if they will surpass the eighth place finish from last term for all the wrong reasons.
Erik ten Hag presided over that effort, but it now looks as if the Manchester outfit will finish in the bottom half for the first time. Defeat at St James’ Park exposed United’s flaws once again as they shipped four goals.
Amorim came in midseason to replace Ten Hag, but has been unable to have the desired impact and United have continued to lose games under their Portuguese manager. His style and philosophy has done little to change their fortunes with the manager previously claiming they were potentially the worst side in the club’s history.
The man in the dugout has owned their poor season and insisted their dire points total was a fair reflection of where they’re at as a club. He said: “The first part of the question is a reflection of our season. We have to accept that we need improvement to move forward, and to try to do things so much better in the future, so we don’t have the same kind of season.

“You can see some of the goals, that they were down to pressure, and you lose possession in some moments and some spaces that we cannot lose possession. We have to improve a lot of things but our position is a reflection of our season. One hundred per cent.”
United lost five times back in December and have continued to be beaten at Old Trafford with the likes of Crystal Palace and Brighton securing wins in Manchester since the turn of the year. Throughout the course of 2025 Amorim only has one win against a team who isn’t in the relegation zone.
The team’s season could be somewhat salvaged with victory in the Europa League. They face Lyon in the last eight this week with victory in the tournament securing Champions League qualification, which has long looked beyond them in the Premier League.
After watching their latest reverse Gary Neville said: “It’s a really desperate situation because the squad is so poor on quality. They’ve got old players, they’ve got young players who are nowhere near it, they have a group in the middle… It’s a worrying situation.”
