Canadian Senator Patrick Brazeau asked Prime Minister Justin Trudeau to step into the boxing ring again for a rematch on Monday, as the Liberal leader announced his resignation.

More than a decade ago, Trudeau and Brazeau faced off for charity. In a post on X, Brazeau said that, on Monday, Trudeau looked “the way I did when he beat me.”

“It’s not a good feeling. But time heals all wounds,” wrote Brazeau, adding that Trudeau should let him know when he’s ready for a rematch to raise money for cancer.

On Monday, Trudeau announced he would be stepping down as leader of the Liberal Party of Canada.

“As you all know, I’m a fighter. Every bone in my body has always told me to fight because I care deeply about Canadians. I care deeply about this country, and I will always be motivated by what is in the best interest of Canadians,” said Trudeau. “I intend to resign as party leader as prime minister, after the party selects its next leader through a robust, nationwide, competitive process. Last night, I asked the president of the Liberal Party to begin that process.”

The eight major moments that finally forced Trudeau to quit

In a post on X later that day, Brazeau referenced Trudeau’s speech.

“You just said you don’t back down from fights,” said Brazeau.

The two entered the boxing ring in 2012, with Trudeau winning by total knockout in the third round, the National Post reported.

More recently, Trudeau joined Canadian Olympic boxer Wyatt Sanford in Nova Scotia in late August. He enjoyed a sparring session with the athlete at a gym in Dartmouth.
