Rory McIlroy announcement made as PGA Tour star keeps expensive promise to wife
Golf news as details of a Rory McIlroy special emerge and Jon Rahm helps out his fellow LIV Golf stars
The prestigious Arnold Palmer Invitational is taking centre stage in the golfing world as the build-up to the Masters continues. Green Jacket holder Rory McIlroy and world number one Scottie Scheffler are part of a star-studded field at Bay Hill.
Scheffler heads into the Arnold Palmer as the favourite again after two wins and four other top-15s in his six appearances at the event. After a week’s rest, he is ready to go again.
Next up is the Players Championship at TPC Sawgrass – the sport’s unofficial fifth major – before the Masters comes around in April. Meanwhile, LIV Golf’s third tournament of the year in Hong Kong is underway, with the likes of Jon Rahm, Sergio Garcia and Tyrrell Hatton in action. Here’s a round-up of the week’s golf news…

McIlroy announcement
McIlroy is set to star in a new documentary focusing on his Masters triumph. The Northern Irishman finally completed golf’s Grand Slam of majors amid emotional scenes at Augusta last year.
McIlroy is no stranger to documentary appearances, having been a regular on Netflix’s Full Swing in recent years. But a new Prime Video special, ‘Rory McIlroy: The Masters Wait’, will be all about one man and his quest to get his hands on the famous Green Jacket.
The feature-length documentary charting McIlroy’s 14-year road to his 2025 victory will premiere on March 30, just days before the 2026 Masters.
Rahm to the rescue
Jon Rahm has saved the day by helping some of his LIV Golf colleagues get to a tournament following the outbreak of war in the Middle East. Following a major joint US-Israeli operation targeting Iranian nuclear and leadership sites, Iran has launched widespread retaliatory missile and drone attacks, leading to mass flight cancellations across the region.
The UAE, of which Dubai is part, is among the countries targeted by Iran, leaving many people stranded. As a result, multiple Dubai-based players were at risk of missing the third LIV Golf Hong Kong, including Lee Westwood, Thomas Detry and Tom McKibbin.
However, Rahm was able to intervene thanks to his private jet. The two-time major champion reportedly dispatched his aircraft to Oman to collect the group, some of whom had travelled from Dubai by bus across the border.
Star keeps promise to wife
Nico Echavarria is ready to fulfil a promise to his new wife following a dramatic victory at the Cognizant Classic. The Colombian star clinched his third career title at Palm Beaches following Shane Lowry’s late implosion, which saw him record back-to-back bogeys at the 16th and 17th holes.
Echavarria and his wife, Claudia, are now set to add a dog to their family after the 31-year-old pledged to get a canine companion upon securing his third tournament win. The Echavarrias, who married in November, have their hearts set on a particular breed.
Echavarria said: “The promise is we’re getting a dog because a dog is expensive, so we need a third win for a dog, that’s how it works. We want a Bernedoodle. Min Woo [Lee, fellow PGA Tour player] just got one.”
