Roy Keane and Paul Scholes ripped apart boss Man Utd are ‘set to approach’
Ruben Amorim’s departure from Manchester United leaves Darren Fletcher in charge of the side as they weigh up their potential options over a permanent successor.
Manchester United are reportedly approaching Michael Carrick about becoming their interim head coach for the remainder of this season. The i Paper reports there’s an expectation they will make contact over the coming days after Ruben Amorim‘s departure on Monday.
Carrick previously took charge of three United matches in late 2021 after the sacking of Ole Gunnar Solskjaer. The former midfielder had stepped up from being a first-team coach, but then in turn left the club after Ralf Rangnick‘s appointment.
His long-time teammates – Paul Scholes and Roy Keane -both questioned Carrick during his caretaker spell. The former said United should’ve sacked all of Solskjaer’s staff, not just the Norwegian.

Speaking on BT Sport, which is now TNT Sports, before Carrick’s first match in charge, Scholes said: “You asked the question of whether they’ll be any better tonight. But it’s the same people running the team.
“It’s the same people who are given massive responsibility to put the team out on the pitch; it’s more Kieran McKenna and Michael Carrick who have prepared the team. Ole gave them the responsibility to do that, why that changes now, I don’t know.”
Scholes added: “I’d be embarrassed to be on the staff now after what happened to Ole. Being on the staff and preparing the team for tonight, they all should have gone.
“Ole trusted them each week to get the team prepared for games. They’ve let the club down, the players down, as much as Ole has.”
Keane then took umbrage with Carrick for saying; “I’m proud of the players and the group” after his first Premier League match in charge. “I disagree with everything he said during that interview,” the pundit said on Sky Sports. “Everything he said.
“He’s talking about the players’ efforts; he’s proud of them. He has been working with the players for the last few months; he was alongside Ole and even in the dugout with him.
“Now, all of a sudden, he’s proud of them this week, and they had a plan? What about all the other games they had? Why aren’t they making an effort in other games? Why aren’t they closing down people in the other games?
“It’s something about the high pressure, it’s too much. We’ve seen all the stats before the match; they’re the worst in the league at closing people down, winning the ball back.
“Praising players there, praising players for doing their jobs, he mentioned the three midfielders. It’s ridiculous.
“He was sitting in the dugout for the last few months with Ole, the last few years, and he was sitting with Mourinho as well. All of a sudden, he’s proud of the players this week – he’s working with the same players.”
Keane concluded: “I wouldn’t be for getting rid of all of the staff. But they need to be held accountable because they weren’t just with Ole, they were with (Jose) Mourinho beforehand.”
