Teenage footballer dies then scores final goal as coffin ‘kicks’ ball
Alexander Zaracho tragically passed away at the age of 19 in Capiata, Paraguay, prompting his football club, Club 30 de Agosto, to come together and organise a unique tribute
A heartbroken football club came together to ensure a unique send-off after their teenage captain tragically passed away. Alexander Zaracho died at the age of 19 in Capiata, Paraguay.
The footballer was a passenger on a motorbike when it was allegedly struck by a speeding motorist. He was in hospital for several months before succumbing to his injuries on January 24.
His mourning family buried him the following day, inviting the whole community and members of the football club to join them at the wake. Zaracho’s club, Club 30 de Agosto, then organised a touching tribute to their young captain.
Zaracho’s coffin was taken to the club’s pitch, where it was placed in front of a goal. With hundreds of people watching, holding white balloons, the ball was then kicked into the casket, sending it rebounding over the goal line.

His final goal was cheered and applauded by the crowd, who then released their balloons into the sky.
Zaracho’s untimely death has brought the community together to mourn, with the football club at its centre. A post on the Club 30 de Agosto Facebook page read: “We announce with deep sorrow the sensitive passing of our player and captain Alexander Zaracho.
“His departure leaves an immense void in our institution and in all those we shared with him on and off the court. Alexander was an example of leadership, commitment and companionship, values that will remain forever in the history of the club.
“We inform you that the wake will be held at your home, located in Capiatá, Company 9 Rojas Cañada. We extend our deepest condolences to his family, friends and loved ones at this time of deep sorrow. Rest in peace, Captain. You will always be in our hearts.”
One person replied: “I feel torn apart in pain with you, there are no words of consolation. Fly high beautiful angel, strength for parents, little sister, grandparents, uncles and aunts.”
Another wrote: “My condolences to the Zaracho family in such a great loss there are no words of comfort for the parents just say a lot of strength.”
A third added: “Rest in peace champion, you’ve fought a lot. You are already in a place where there is no suffering and pain.”
Sharing a video of the memorial, the club’s caption read: “The legacy of our captain Alex Zaracho will live forever in our hearts and in the history of the club. We will always remember you.”
