Manchester United’s rising star Kobbie Mainoo is facing a challenging period in his fledgling career. The 20-year-old midfielder, who was hailed as the next big thing after his impressive performances for England at Euro 2024, has found himself sidelined under Ruben Amorim.
Despite his versatility on the pitch, Mainoo hasn’t started a single Premier League match this season and has only made five appearances as a substitute, clocking up just 113 minutes of play.

Lee Carsley extends an olive branch
During Euro 2024, Mainoo was a key player in the Three Lions’ midfield, helping them reach the final. He played in all four knockout rounds, including the final which England lost 2-1 to Spain.
However, due to his lack of game time at United, he’s currently not being considered by Thomas Tuchel. Despite this setback, Mainoo still hopes to make the World Cup squad next year, and Carsley has offered him a chance to join the youth side.

“No, they’re definitely in consideration,” Carsley explained when asked if Mainoo and fellow-omitted youngster Adam Wharton would be considered for the under-21s side. Neither were picked for England’s fixtures over the October international break.
“They’re in the senior bracket,” he continued. “I think it’s fair to say that they’re more senior-end than 21s end. But I think there’s always the option.”
Response following snub
Despite missing out on a call-up this October, Mainoo is ensuring he maintains top physical form. During the international break, he shared an Instagram photo showcasing his gym progress.
This will delight boss Amorim and demonstrates that whilst he’s encountered some disappointments, Mainoo isn’t allowing his spirits to sink.
With numerous midfield stars having been on international duty with their nations, Mainoo might get some playing time when United make the trip to Anfield on Sunday.
Carrington developments
Further evidence of how Mainoo is handling his drop from favour emerged through Fabrizio Romano. The journalist discussed Mainoo on his YouTube platform.
Romano suggests that whilst he put in a loan application during the summer, Mainoo isn’t causing disruption at United. He continues to show dedication in training sessions and is determined to establish himself at his beloved childhood club.
It was also emphasised that the Stockport-born midfielder never pushed for a permanent departure from Old Trafford. This indicates that his preferred future lies in Manchester, but he must nail down a regular place before the World Cup.
Criticised by former Liverpool star
Some feel that Amorim has been correct to exclude Mainoo from his starting XI despite the potential he possesses. Steve Nicol, who shone for Liverpool during the 1980s, believes Mainoo is a superb player in possession but that his defensive contributions are woeful.
He told ESPN: “In my opinion, Mainoo is great with the ball at his feet but when the opposition has the ball, he doesn’t do enough. In fact, he doesn’t do anything.
“He doesn’t stop people getting at Man United’s back four. And the fact that that is one of the biggest problems United have and this guy still can’t figure it out.
“I think basically he’s been found out because at the end of the day, when you play for the top clubs and you want to be challenging, your players have to contribute on both sides of the ball. And if there is one thing Mainoo doesn’t do, it’s contribute defensively.
“The fact that Casemiro is starting over him consistently tells you that there is a problem and the kid is not as good as we thought he was when he first burst onto the scene.”
Premier League loan interest
Mainoo has made no secret of his desire for more game time, with several clubs reportedly showing interest during the summer transfer window. It’s anticipated that these clubs will come knocking again in January if Mainoo’s loan aspirations remain unchanged.
Sky Sports reports that Newcastle are among a host of teams keeping tabs on Mainoo’s development and could potentially make a loan offer when the transfer window reopens.
The report also suggests that Italian outfit Napoli maintain their interest in Mainoo and may also revisit their pursuit in January. Their head coach Antonio Conte is said to be eager to pair Mainoo with his former United colleague Scott McTominay, who has flourished since leaving Old Trafford.
